Privacy Policy

This policy explains how Letter Step: Reading and Writing, developed by Ellvan Studios (“we”, “us”), handles information. It applies to the app. Google Play and other services have their own privacy policies.

At a glance: Children’s profiles, handwriting and progress are stored on the device. No account is required. Optional reminders are scheduled locally. Google Play handles subscriptions and restoration directly in the Android app. If a grown-up opts in, Google Firebase Analytics receives general usage information to help improve Letter Step.

Profiles and learning records

A grown-up can choose a child’s first name, age, avatar and starting point. The app stores these details, writing samples, notes, activity progress, settings, stars and sticker collections in local app storage to provide the activities and learning book. A guest space can also be used. These learning records stay in local app storage. Avoid entering more personal information than needed, including in notes.

Children and families

Letter Step is designed for children to use with a grown-up. It does not require a child to create an account or provide contact details. Grown-ups control profiles, settings and purchases. If you believe information about a child has been sent to us, please contact us so we can investigate and take appropriate action.

Reminders

If a grown-up enables reminders and grants device permission, the app schedules notifications on the device. They are local reminders, not messages sent by our servers. Reminders can be turned off in the app or device settings.

Subscriptions and Google Play

The app offers a 48-hour period of free access without payment details. It does not automatically become a subscription. Where subscriptions are offered, Google Play handles purchases and payment information under its own privacy policy. To verify or restore an active subscription, the app queries Google Play, checks the purchase signature on the device and confirms completed purchases with Google Play. This version does not send purchase tokens to an Ellvan subscription-verification server. We do not receive full payment card details. Google may process account, purchase and device information as described in Google’s privacy policy.

A local review code can unlock activities for app reviewers for the current session. The code is checked on the device and is not transmitted to us.

Optional usage analytics

A grown-up can choose to enable usage analytics in Settings > Privacy. It is off until permission is given, and the learning activities work without it. We use Google Analytics for Firebase to understand general app use and improve the app.

When enabled, Google receives app-instance and installation identifiers, app and device information, general screen and session activity, broad activity-completion categories, approximate location derived from the device’s IP address, and purchase or subscription events such as product and price. These identifiers are pseudonymous, rather than a child’s name, and are not completely anonymous. Analytics data is encrypted in transit.

We do not send child profiles, names, ages, handwriting samples, letter or word targets, learning-book notes or profile identifiers to Analytics. Advertising ID collection, advertising consent and personalised advertising signals are disabled. We do not use analytics to target advertising to children.

You can turn usage analytics off in Settings > Privacy. This stops future analytics collection and resets the on-device analytics identifier. It does not automatically delete information previously sent to Google. Event and user-level retention is controlled by the Google Analytics property’s retention settings. Google may process analytics information on servers outside your country; see Google’s privacy policy and Firebase’s privacy information.

Storage, retention and deletion

Local profiles and learning data remain on the device until removed in the app, app data is cleared, or the app is uninstalled. Android backup is disabled for the app. A grown-up may export a learning book to a file, which is then managed separately on the device. Removing local data or reinstalling can permanently remove learning records and stickers; restoring a Google Play subscription does not restore them. Purchase-related information may also be retained by Google under its policies.

Security and your choices

Use your device’s security controls to protect locally stored information. You may change profile details and settings, turn reminders off, and remove app data. To ask about data held by Ellvan Studios or request deletion where applicable, contact us below. We will respond in accordance with applicable law.
